Hi! I hope our regular readers are not shell shocked at the sudden change in format in this forum. But I had been working on it these last few weeks and several people who had a look agreed that it was better than the previous layout. However those of you who prefer the old look will find it in the link "Reflections on life and relationships by members of basicindia". All is not yet lost!

Meanwhile new articles and reflections from now on will also be featured in "Your Space" which you will find in the links at the right hand side of the page.

The Story of Basicindia and Timbaktu

This venture is about the opening up of a space that has not really been explored before in depth, an attempt at a new beginning. One could describe it as an attempt to reach a common land where east and west, north and south, head and heart can meet without having to struggle with each other as they have done over the centuries. Perhaps making way for a new stage of life.

Part of the history of this venture begins in India, in the year 1990, the year when the Timbaktu Collective came into being. This was when Bablu (Ganguly) and Mary (Vattamattam) together with a small group of friends decided to settle down on a 32 acre plot of land in Andhra Pradesh, which was dry and ravaged and not welcoming in the least. Far from being defeated this little group of interested people saw a challenge in the hardship and decided to find ways to heal and regenerate the barren land and to transform it into a green agro forest. They named the land Timbaktu (Sarihaddu Rekha in Telugu). The place where the earth meets the sky.

Over the years not only Timbaktu but also the hills surrounding the area have become green, while insects, birds and animals which were no longer to be seen have once again made an appearance. A small community of volunteers, committed to developmental and ecological regeneration, has now settled in Timbaktu to work on many different aspects of life in the region.

About the same time that Timbaktu was coming into its own, a small movement was taking place in far away Switzerland, in the home and clinic of a psychiatrist called Samuel Widmer. In the same way that Timbaktu stands for the regeneration of forest lands and traditional water harvesting structures (among other things), so too this movement in the Swiss village many thousands of miles away, had (and continues to follow) as its goal, the revitalisation of the human spirit and soul.

The people who came to Samuel Widmer, from near and far, were looking for a new way to live - without wars, without exploitation, in peace and freedom. In the course of their exploration they learned, that no regeneration – external or internal - can take place without our being prepared to face ourselves as individuals, without our being ready to deal with our personal weaknesses – our fears, our greed, and inability to share ourselves, our belongings or our energy.

They realised that the barrenness, ugliness, pollution and destruction which we have brought about in the external world actually mirrors all that is inside us. To effect a complete revolution, one that is not only external but is also a transformation of human nature, requires each of us to face and to change the way we are within, in such a way that this inner transformation is able to reveal itself externally and at the collective level as well.

Our goals at basicindia are:

• To help each other to break out of old and unproductive habits
• To do so by learning to listen and by quietening the mind
• To replace unproductive behaviour patterns with an attitude that is caring and creative
• To support all those who genuinely want to transcend the boundaries of the current social structures in which we live and make way for a new way of life

Basicindia is a small and informal network of like-minded individuals looking for a better way to live and to relate to each other. We are not looking for techniques that will uplift us or help us to get rich quick. We are not looking for mantras or quick fix solutions. We are looking for people who are willing to listen, willing to make space for each other, looking for a new way to live in this crazy world. We are looking for friends who will help us to create a new world together, one that is sane, caring and respectful of life in general. A world which we can feel proud to leave to our children.
